Rear Trunk
Opening
To open the rear trunk, ensure Model Y is in Park, then do one of the following:
- Approach the trunk with your phone key in your front pocket (see Hands-Free Trunk).
- Touch the associated button on the touchscreen.
- Double-click the rear trunk button on the key fob.
- Touch the rear trunk button on the mobile app.
- Press the switch located under the liftgate's exterior handle (a valid key must be detected).
Model Y must be unlocked or detect a key before you can use the switch to open the liftgate.
To stop a liftgate while it is moving, single-click the rear trunk button on the key fob. Then, when you double-click the rear trunk button, it moves again, but in the opposite direction (provided it was not almost entirely open or closed when you stopped it). For example, if you single-click to stop the liftgate while opening, when you double-click, it closes.
A low voltage power outlet is located on the left side of the rear trunk.

Adjusting Liftgate Opening Height

- Open the trunk, then manually lower or raise the liftgate to the desired opening height.

- Double-click the rear trunk button on the key fob.
- Press the switch located on the underside of the liftgate
If the liftgate senses an obstruction when closing, it stops moving and chimes two times. Remove the obstruction and try closing it again.
Parcel Shelf
The parcel shelf covers the rear cargo and is useful when you want to conceal valuables, keep the sun away from groceries, and minimize road noise.
To fold the parcel shelf, first hold the circular (rear-most) panel and flip the panel back on top of the shelf. Then lift the semi-folded, two-panel stack and push it towards the rear seat. The parcel shelf should now be folded in a stack of four panels.
To unfold, flip over the circular (rear-most) panel and pull the shelf toward you until it straightens out and lies flat again.
To remove the parcel shelf from your vehicle, fold the circular (rear-most) panel and lift the parcel shelf upward with your hand underneath the bottom of the shelf to disengage the magnets in the front corners and slide the parcel shelf out. Stow the parcel shelf under the trunk floor when not in use.
Accessing the Cargo Area
Rear Trunk Load Limits
Distribute the weight of cargo as evenly as possible between the front and rear trunks.
Cargo Securing Equipment (if equipped)
Model Y has four hooks located in the rear trunk (two toward the front and two toward the back). These hooks are designed to attach to the four corners of a lashing device, such as a cargo net, to secure objects to the rear trunk floor in normal highway and city driving. For more information, follow the instructions from a third-party lashing device manufacturer.
The cargo hooks are designed to secure loose objects in the cargo area. Do not exceed the maximum weight capacity of the rear trunk (see Accessing the Cargo Area).
